Considering the endless color palette of the Amazon, I took a closer look at the black communities of the forest, descendants of the ancient African fugitives, whom, in a mixture of courage and hope, reached different latitudes in Brazil to sculpt new homes, and imagine other futures. Thus, the mocambos or quilombos, were inaugurated.
And if even today there is so much talk about the unfortunate episode of captivity and servitude, less attention is paid to some of the infinite immaterial expressions that thrived in such places, so carelessly rare, perhaps unique in the entire planet.
Deep in the forest I sought the secret of the litanies of the healers, “mezinhas, prayers and herbs to cure illnesses, to align the spirit and to close all kinds of wounds.” And I found in remote rural communities celebrations such as the “samba-de-cacete”, the “bangu-é”, and so many forgotten memories of those whom – invisible by so many subjective distances to the outside world – sat with me to evoke the echos from the past…”
À interminável paleta de cores da Amazônia, busquei acrescentar os pretos da floresta, descendentes dos fugidos, que em um misto de coragem e esperança alcançaram outros Brasis para esculpir novas moradias e imaginar outros futuros. Assim inauguraram os mocambos, ou quilombos.
E se ainda hoje tanto se fala do infeliz episódio do cativeiro e servidão, menos atenção se dá às suas quase infinitas expressões humanas, tão despreocupadamente raras, talvez únicas em todo o planeta.
Floresta adentro, encontrei os filhos do africano músico, artesão, ou pintor. Busquei o segredo das ladainhas das benzedeiras, “mezinhas, rezas e ervas para curar doenças, endireitar quebrados e fechar feridas.” E encontrei nas remotas comunidades rurais o samba-de-cacete, o bangu-é, e tantas memórias esquecidas daqueles que invisíveis pela distância do mundo, comigo se sentavam para conversar lembranças…
